Serena Curmi has been practicing as a freelance illustrator since graduating with a degree in illustration from Falmouth College of Arts in 2001. She now lives in Bristol where she enjoys working in a sunny studio.
Serena’s creativity was inspired by her adventurous upbringing of living aboard a sailing ship with her family. With many long hours at sea she taught herself to draw by copying pictures from her brother's Beano annual, and painting Victorian ballroom dancers with detailed, bow-laden gowns.
She initially works in pencil and pen, and acrylic paint adding the finishing touches with Photoshop. She enjoys using rich, bright colours to create her quirky, fairy-tale illustrations. Picture book projects include the charming story of The Dream Jar, for Houghton Mifflin.
She was recently commissioned by A Productions to illustrate a picture book to be adapted into an animated story and read aloud on CBeebies.
